Holiday Bargains to Cyprus

Mark Anthony gave Cyprus to Cleopatra as a token of his passion and what more could a girl want? It has beautiful scenery, wonderful beaches, lively resorts and a superb sunshine record.

Most of the holiday resorts in Cyprus have a variety of watersports on offer, weather permitting, but in winter the emphasis is more on long, lazy promenades and gentle scenic strolls amid the historic landscape. If you fancy checking out some of the underwater treasures there's excellent scuba-diving on warm days around the rocky coves of the Cape Greco Peninsula. About 30 minutes drive from Paphos is Aphrodite's Rock where, according to legend, the Goddess of Love and Beauty emerged from the sea. Over on the east coast Ayia Napa winds down from its frenetic summer pace to offer a picturesque harbour and attractive beaches, while Protaras is a relaxed resort set amidst fine sands.

Away from the beaches you can enjoy pottering around the shops for souvenirs which range from T-shirts to handmade lace and leather goods. If you need a new pair of sunglasses it's worth waiting until you get to Cyprus - they're much cheaper here! Choose between quayside tavernas in Paphos or beachside restaurants in Limassol. Both resorts have bars, discos and live music, while Ayia Napa and Protaras are quieter with a small selection of bars and restaurants.

Cyprus has more than its fair share of archaeological remains and historical sites. Head for Paphos to see the Byzantine Castle, the spectacular Tombs of the Kings and the ancient mosaics at the House of Dionysos. It's well worth taking the time to explore inland. A day spent in the Troodos Mountains with their lush valleys, traditional villages and forests is a day to remember.
